NICU at GRB

NICU at GRB+ Newborn and childrens Hospital Provides hoslistic care for sick newborns of all premature and sick neonates born before their due date. Together we aim for intact survival without disability. We are always looking for new avenues to improve ourselves and improve the experience as perceived by the family.

At GRB we have some of the highly sophisticated and technically advanced equipments specifically meant for the management of newborns. Preterm babies are very vulnerable to infections. We ensure strict handwashing with RO sterilised water before entering the unit. NICU at GRB+ hospital has three units. All three units are equipped with 24*7 laminar flow to ensure maximal sterility. We are one of the few hospitals with inhouse milk bank t ensure pasteurised milk for our preterm babies.

In addition to carrying out the most common procedures and routines meant for newborns we also carry out some of the most technically advanced treatments like high frequency ventilation with proximal flow sensors, Total body cooling, Cerebral function monitoring, Point of care ultrasound and Echocardiogram, etc. Some of the common and essential procedures in managing neonatesinclude, resuscitation, Non invasive and Invasive Ventilation, with pulmonary graphic display, Blood and Blood product transfusion, Exchange transfusion, Umbilical venous and arterial line catheterisation, Percutaneous Central venous line insertion, Peripheral arterial line catheterisation, Intercostal Chest drain insertion, Suprapubic Bladder aspiration, Bone marrow aspiration, Lumbar puncture, Total Parenteral Nutrition preparation and infusion, Peritoneal Dialysis etc.

The birth of a baby is an important event in a couples life and @ GRB we always remain supportive to the family. Since most of our babies are born at other hospital the baby and mother may remain separate for a few days. In case of normal delivery the mother will be transferred to us on day day 2 or day 3 of life and in case of caesarean section it may take upto 5-7 days depending on te mothers condition. Our NICU guarantees the best care for your baby and sure we will be exceeding your expectations.

Our NICU has 25 beds out of which 10 beds are equipped for level 3 Intensive care, for managing very premature and sick babies. For babies less than 1 KG or less than 28 weeks we may be using closed incubators to reduce insensible water losses, maintain humidity and better temperature control.

Pulse oximeters

These monitors help us to monitor the saturation, heart rate, respiratory rate, non invasive and invasive blood pressure, continous ECG, temperature and CVP. We use Specialised sensors tailor made for these tiny babiesAll babies admitted in NICU will be monitored using pulse oximeters. This monitoring alerts immediatelyif the baby is not maintaining vitals.Also theyhelp us to prevent higher concentration of Oxygen in the baby. We use Pulse oximeters tailormade for newborns with latest technology for accurate monitoring of saturation .

Syringe& infusion pumps

With a few exceptions all medications and fluids in our NICU are given with the help of Syringe and infusion pumps. These pumps are calibrated at regular intervals to maintain high degree of accuracy.

Ventilator with Pulmonary Graphic display

Some babies when sick may need ventilation. Depending on the newborns condition we may need invasive ventilation (through an Endotracheal tube) or Non invasive ventilation. Our ventilators are equipped with flow and O2 sensors to ensure the exact volume of air and oxygen delivered to the lungs thereby minimise complications by these machines.

This is used for resuscitation of preterm and sick babiesin a controlled manner with regulation of the pressures delivered.

Closed Incubators

Premature baby born at 28 weeks 900 gms B Weight in NICU- Receiving Intensive Care- respiratory support with parenteral nutrition and other Intensive supportive treatment.

Ensuring Safe Transport

We encourage Mothers to deliver at their obstetricians hospital looking after them. Our Medical team will attend the delivery, Resuscitate the baby after delivery, give appropriate medications as necessary and then safely transfer. We have retrieved twin newborn babies as low as 600gms post delivery and they are now thriving well. Our transport incubator is equipped with ventilator, syringe pumps and all other equipments needed for safe transport and is literally an NICU on the move. Our ambulance is available 24*7 to facilitate the same in a clean and safe environment.

Cerebral Function Monitor

This machine is used to monitor the electrical activity of the brain 24/7 like an ECG which is used to monitor the electrical activity of the heart. If the baby develops any seizures(Fits) that will be picked up by the machine at an early stage before even the baby starts having visible seizures.

Total body cooling machine – With Servo Control

This machine is used to treat those newborn babies suspected to have brain damage and prevent further consequences that may affect the entire lifespan of the child. This machine regulates the body temperature and maintains at a set value. If the baby is warm machine will circulate cool liquid and if the baby is excessively cold machine will supply warm fluid around the baby and thereby helps to maintain the temperature automatically.

Bubble CPAP

We have one of the best CPAP devices to provide respiratory support to preterm and sick babies. This helps us to minimise intubation and ventilation and also helps in coming off the ventilator support sooner. This is one of the popular modes of respiratory support given to premature and term babies with respiratory distress. These devices are attached to blender to prevent the toxicity of high concentration of oxygen.

High flow/O2 theraphy

We use blended oxygen and air even if babies require small quantity of oxygen through nasal prongs to prevent oxygen toxicity and humidified gas to prevent infection and damage of the very delicate airway. We use tailormade imported prongs for the same.

Phototherapy units

We have the latest phototherapy units which help in treating the commonest type of jaundice in newborn.

Manikins

Manikins are used to educate all medical and non med Junior doctors and nursing staff working in NICU and nursing staff dealing with deliveries. Also we train parents in Basic life supportbefore discharging them home from Newborn ICU.
